How restrictive are the borders
between time and space? Can
anything ever cross them?
What if a 16-year-old American
girl living in the 21st century
could somehow correspond
with an 18-year-old boy living
in Europe in 1912? And if they
could communicate, would they
be able to make a personal
connection - to find what they
have in common - or something
even deeper? Against a
background of historical facts,
Rebecca Wilson artfully weaves
a timeless fantasy about two
young people separated by
nearly a century and a wide
ocean. If you enjoy a touching
page-tuner you'll love "White
Star."
"Just as she started back up the
stairs Sarah saw something blue and
rippling out of the corner of her eye.
She felt herself being drawn to the
magnificence and mystery of
something totally foreign to her. It
looked like a watery wall with silver
and white ripples coming out of the
center. As she walked closer, the
ground grew colder. She lifted her
hand to touch it for she had no
control over her body. She felt
something grab her finger and pull
her into the watery wall." So Sarah
was drawn into another world
populated by centaurs - creatures
who were half-person and
half-horse. Would she find kindness
and acceptance or meet persecution
and abuse for being different?
Pamela "Katie" Locke has created a
fantasy world and filled it with
enchanting creatures.
Meredith Janke has plenty to say -
about life in different locations, our
outward actions, and our inward
thoughts: "...(high school) flickers
of phases - baggy t-shirts, hippie,
prep, trendy - I did it all. It was
there that I had my greatest
spiritual revelations, most sinister
depressions, and friends that still
know me more deeply than the
majority of my college friends.
Almost a year has passed since our
high fives, and big smiles and
"Don't ever change! Have a rockin'
summer" yearbook signatures...
Maybe it is still too close, maybe
one year isn't enough to analyze
four. Like a hand that is held too
near the eyes, I just see blurry
shapes. When I pull it back, from
an extended arm I can see the lines
in my skin, the tiny blond hairs,
and the silver ring on my finger."
Kelsie Nygren has created a
heroine for the 21st century,
Josephine Whitwalker, a young
warrior with special powers for
good. Jo is part of RODD or Rytra
Organization to Defeat Darkness.
She can control the elements of
Light to fight the evil Sayta who
can control the elements of
Dark. Jo describes her gift: "All
Rytra can sense the elements
constantly. We don't realize we
can control the elements when
we are children. When we reach
our teens, the awareness
becomes more insistent. That
nagging feeling in the back of
the mind leads to many a
paranoid teenager... We feel the
elements after we are trained
like a soft sensation tickling the
edge of our consciousness." Jo's
feisty, foot-in-mouth personality
will keep you with her 'til the
end. And have you wishing it
hadn't ended.
Curt Shirley had a comfortable
life with his wife and two
children in Georgia. It was 1944
and D-Day, a great American
victory, had just taken place on
the European front. Surely
World War II would soon be over
and the troops would come home!
Everyone hoped so. Everyone
prayed so. But one day Curt's life
changed drastically. He received
his notice to report for active
military duty. The war wasn't
over. There would be a strong
American surge to push the
Germans back, invade their
country, and complete Hitler's
defeat. An expert sharpshooter,
Curt knew he would answer his
country's call and fight overseas.
There was no question about
that. The only question was:
Would he ever return to his
family?
In 1861 a great conflict looms on
the horizon. Thirteen states have
seceded from the Federal Union.
The Civil War has begun. In the
peaceful South Carolina
countryside, the Pearce family is
caught in the conflict. The father
and eldest son enlist in the new
Confederate army leaving the
younger son to take care of his
family. The grief stricken Mrs.
Pearce discovers that this son,
despite his father's orders, also
yearns to put on a Confederate
uniform and march off to battle.
How should peace loving people
react to a war that sends
thousands to the grave and
divides families across battle
lines? Will they choose forgiveness
or bitterness? And will they
ultimately experience Jesus'
greatest commandment, love?
Hannah Reeves uses one of the
most interesting historical periods
as a backdrop for her moving
story of a family's struggles as war
threatens to engulf them.
